Boswellia: The Super Herb for the Joints

Author: Administrator
Joint pain is the most excruciating problem of people with arthritis. Even for healthy people, joint pain from intense physical activities can be debilitating. More often, the remedy for joint pain and other joint symptoms are the synthetic prescription NSAIDs (Non-Steroidal Anti-Inflammatory Drugs). While they may provide pain-relief, NSAIDs are also known for causing side effects like stomach ulcers, gastric bleeding, indigestion, anemia, and gastrointestinal perforation. Good thing, there is a natural, safe, and very effective alternative called boswellia.

Boswellia, also famous as "Indian frankinsense" and scientifically known as Boswellia serrata is an herb that thrives in the dry regions of India, Mediterranean, and Africa. India's traditional Ayurvedic medicine has been using this herb for centuries because the Indian's believe that it could extend the life of humans like the way it does on elephants. Indian healers use Boswellia for the treatment of arthritis and for other diseases characterized by inflammation. These traditional benefits are actually proven by today's scientific studies on Boswellia.

According to medical research, the gummy oleoresin exudates from the bark of the Boswellia tree contain high levels of Boswellic acid. There are actually six boswellic acids, the most important six are alphaboswellic acid, acetyl-alpha-boswellic acid, beta-boswellic acid, acetyl-beta-boswellic acid, 11-keto-betaboswellic-acid, and acetyl-11-keto-beta-boswellic-acid. These active ingredients possess potent antiinflammatory properties that reduce pain and swelling in people with arthritis. Boswellic acid excellently blocks the action of 5-lipoxygenase inhibitor (5-LOX) and human leukocyte elastase (HLE), two of the most important inflammation-inducing chemicals. According to a German study, the inhibition of 5-LOX and HLE is a unique ability of the Boswellia herb. Additionally, 5-LOX is needed in the synthesis of Leukotrienes, the compound in the immune cells that triggers the inflammatory process. Standardized Boswellia supplements commercially available in the market usually contain 37.5 to 75% of Boswellic acids.

Arthritis is a medical condition wherein the joints become inflamed due to mechanical tear of the connective tissues. The most common symptoms of arthritis are severe joint pain, swelling, and loss of mobility in the joints. According to the Center for Disease Control and Prevention, 50 million Americans are suffering from arthritis of any form. And, 1 in every 5 or 20% of Americans are diagnosed with the disease. Boswellia supplements can help these people along with other arthritic patients from all over the world to improve their quality of live and provide relief for arthritis symptoms.

Boswellia supplements can also be helpful in other inflammatory conditions like asthma and inflammatory bowel diseases. Asthma is respiratory condition where the airway passages become inflamed, causing wheezing, difficulty in breathing, and coughing. Inflammatory Bowel Diseases (IBDs) are Crohn's disease, ulcerative colitis and Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS).
